One of Figaro's favorite things to do is make new friends. She loves to learn about new people, and they always teach her new things. Some of her favorite friends are her paper friends; they only live in paper and books and stories, and she can't see them very often, but they always have the most exciting stories, and they always teach her the best things.
Today, Figaro met two new people: Sam and Frodo. They're from a land called Middle Earth, where magic and wizards and elves and dwarves exist. Frodo and Sam are called Hobbits, which means that they're small like Figaro! Figaro met them while hanging out on her favorite lookout rock.
Frodo was having a rough day, and Sam was making him dinner (potatoes). Figaro learned that they had been traveling with seven other friends, but they had to split up. They were in charge of destroying a magic ring that was creating a lot of problems for their entire land. Figaro asked to see the magic ring, but they said it was too dangerous to even look at.
Figaro asked why they had left their other friends, who all sounded like very nice people. They said that their journey was getting too dangerous, and they didn't want their other friends to get in trouble or hurt. Sam said that Frodo had tried to leave and finish the journey all by himself! But Sam had promised to take care of him, and so he left with him. Sam said that Frodo was in charge of carrying the ring to where they could destroy it, and that carrying the ring made him sad and tired and feel like not himself. Sam didn't want his best friend to feel sad and tired and not like himself while traveling all alone, so he's doing his best to make things easier for his friend during this hard time.
Figaro hopes one day to be as good a friend as Sam is. She had a lovely dinner with them and then watched them continue their journey towards a place called Mordor. Maybe she'll meet Sam and Frodo again after they finish their journey.
